    3. Hi Tracy, I searched when you first posted but couldn't find anything on the IGI. That's disappointing but not conclusive. Many of my ancestors are not on the IGI and I have extracts of birth registrations for them. I think the GRO is better but I suggest you study its tutorials, including how to use the "wild cards" before you log on . It can get expensive. The only thing that I can add to the family that Christine identified is that that Kenneth MacLeod is described as a smith (presumably a blacksmith) in Eribol, which is just east of Durness. I think that "Esq" was used to denote a man of property but later came to be used in place of "Mr", e.g. letters might be addressed to Kenneth W. MacLeod, Esq. Questions: What does the "W" stand for? Have you identified the ship they emigrated on? Have you searched death registrations or tombstones for Kenneth Sr. and Robina. These might give place of birth. Good luck, Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: Christine Stokes Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2001 3:09 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: More specific information Hi Tracy I have looked at the IGI plus all my records and I cannot find any mention of a Kenneth Macleod (spelled any way) with a wife Robina Macdonald having children or being married anywhere in Scotland. What I did find was the only family with the husband named Kenneth Macleod and a Macdonald wife: Kenneth Macleod married Catherine Macdonald at Halkirk, Caithness, on 24 June 1781. They had the following children all born in Durness, Sutherland: Elizabeth (Betty), christened 16 June 1787; John, 19 April 1789; Catherine, 20 April 1782; Charles, 27 July 1783; Isobel, 9 Janaury 1786 plus another John, born 20 August 1791. No Kenneth junior. Kenneth Macleod senior - the only one recorded on the IGI born around 1752 was in Edinburgh. We do have some members who have knowledge of the Durness area. Can any of them offer any help on this? I also wonder if any of our Nova Scotia people on here know of the early beginnings of this family? Hopefully someone will come back with answers. The OPR at the GRO is sometimes better than the IGI insofar as it may give you a farm name but not always. To use the IGI go to www.familysearch.com Choose search for ancestors, then click on International Genealogical Indexes. Then put in the names and off you go. MacLeod [mailto:tamacleod@mediaone.net] Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2001 7:01 PM To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: More specific information Here we go: Kenneth MacLeod Sr. born circa 1752 rumored to have come from Lord Reays County. That information came from a letter written in 1834 by the Rev. Alexander Farquharson to the Edinburg Ladies Association. He was quoting Kenneth MacLeod when he gave that information Kenneth Sr. was married to Robina MacDonald born circa 1760 in Scotland. They had at least 5 known children who came to Nova Scotia based on the 1812 census in Middle River. Elizabeth born ca. 1780 who married Roderick (Rory) MacKenzie Sr. once she came to Nova Scotia. John born ca 1787 Kenneth (W) Jr. Esq. born 15 Sep 1790 rumored to have been born in Caithness. I have documentation saying he was a native of Sutherland Shire when he petitioned the King for a grant of Land in Nova Scotia in 1812 (which was granted) and two other unnamed children one may have been a male named Malcolm but that hasn't been verified yet. Kenneth Sr., Robina, Kenneth Jr., Elizabeth, John and the unnamed children immigrated to Wagamotkook Nova Scotia about 1800, which was later named Middle River, Nova Scotia. Christina, you mentioned the IGI for the old parish records, does the GROS online OPR have the same information? One last question. Kenneth Jr. used Esq. after his name. What does this mean? He was not a lawyer that we know of. Once they got to Middle River there is a lot of information about this family as they were one of 4 original families of this town and the Historical Society there has published a few books with mentioning them. When I questioned the birth information no one ever tried to document the accuracy of the passed down information. We are direct descendants of this family. Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Tracy Tracy A.
