Parents GEORGE SUTHERLAND and JANET FORDYCE, ("JESSIE" from HUNTLY, SCT). They moved to NEW GLASGOW in 1819 from the farm 2 mi. below, down the river from NEW GLASGOW. His home was on the opposite side of the river from what was long known as STONE HOUSE POINT. CHARLES, merchant, shipbuilder had a store at corner of Provost & Kempt Streets. 2 ships built by him- "ISABELLA" & "SHEPHERDESS". The ISABELLA is said to have been the 1st vessel built in New Glasgow. The ISABELLA crossed the Atlantic under CAPT. SUTHERLAND's command, once bringing to Pictou School, MASTER GRANT, who taught on the EAST RIVER above NEW GLASGOW. "This schoolmaster afterwards became the father of two of PICTOU COUNTY's most celebrated sons, Principal REV. GEORGE M.GRANT D.D., QUEEN'S U., KINGSTON, ONT., and Rev. CHARLES M. GRANT, D.D., DUNDEE." CAPT. SUTHERLAND was lost up the LABRADOR COAST on a voyage in 1857. CHARLES had 1 bro WILLIAM, 1 sis ISABELLA, another sis SUSAN died young. WLM was ten years the senior of CHARLES. WLM was settled on his farm 2-3 miles below NEW GLASGOW. The brothers previously lived in SYDNEY for some years on farms left them by their father. REV. DR. JAMES MCGREGOR had in one missionary journey been at SYDNEY, & baptized the 2 sons of GEORGE & JANET. This is mentioned in "THE LIFE OF REV. DR. MCGREGOR", by REV. DR. PATTERSON. Sis ISABELLA m. GEORGE CANTLEY, living on a farm given by her father near her brothers. After Father GEORGE passed on, JANET persuaded them to move up to EAST RIVER of PICTOU, "to be near the means of grace" (DR. MCGREGOR's Church). WLM. SUTHERLAND lived for many years, until his death near his brother's farm on the EAST RIVER. For many years he was an elder (succeeded by brother GEORGE) in REV. DR. ROY'S church, called then, JAMES CHURCH. CHARLES SUTHERLAND's sister, ISABELLA (GEORGE CANTLEY). One son, THOMAS CANTLEY, managed NOVA SCOTIA STEEL COMPANY. CHARLES m. ISABELLA FRASER, children: ANNIE (MACDONALD) had 2 little boys that passed on before she did. JESSIE FORDYCE SUTHERLAND (JAMES GRANT CAMERON) children: REV. DR. CHARLES J. CAMERON, GEORGE FREDERICK CAMERON (NEW GLASGOW Post Office cornerstone dedicated to him, the place of his birth) was poet & editor of "KINGSTON NEWS", CHARLOTTE "ALICE" CAMERON. ------------ GEORGE FREDERICK CAMERON, my Ggrandfather died at 31 yrs. old in the year of only child, my grandmother JESSIE CAMERON (ALISON)'s birth.
