Hello, Marla I find a potentially useful geographic note using the index to Scottish History Society's Fourth Series - Volume 8: Papers on Sutherland Estate Management 1802-1816 - Vol. 1; editor R.J. Adam, MA [Edinburgh; copyright 1972; SBN 9500260 3 4 (set of of two volumes)] Page lviii, Volume I "... though Donald Sage gives no indication of the fact in his description of the removals, a large part of the low lands along the east bank of the river, between Kildonan kirk and Balnavaliach, was lotted out for settlement by John Roy under Young's direction." Notes: The parish is Kildonan, the year 1812 or 1813, the river is the Helmsdale. Re Donald Sage on removals: see Memorabilia Domestica (Wick, 1889), pp. 248-9. I would guess that Balnavaliach was upstream from the church - but where exactly? Please, would some kind soul instruct me on this point. Best wishes, Frances bishad@direct.ca PS - I do not have a map that shows Balnavaliach. Knockfin was east of River Halladale (between the river and the Caithness border). Achintoul was to the south. Loch an Ruathaire and Ellig were to the west of the river. Please share the good news if you find a source for a comprehensive pre-Clearance map.
