Up until Reform one can work out who the electors were - essentially people with an interest in land, landowners, wadsetters, and the many with a manufactured 'fake' vote. In Sutherland you had to possess land with a valued rent of £200 Scots - elsewhere in Scotland £400 Scots. The valuations were based on overall values set in 1667. Unfortunately, very few 19th century electoral rolls have survived for Sutherland. The voters, however, will turn up in other sources, including estate rentals and valuation rolls etc. Malcolm Bangor-Jones -----Original Message----- From: Christine Stokes [mailto:chris@northants26.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: 08 May 2001 21:05 To: SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: Register of Voters ******************************************************************* This email has been received from an external party and has been swept for the presence of computer viruses. ******************************************************************* Sara I feel sure someone else will know better than I do on this subject but as far as I know until very late the only people who qualified for a vote were landowners. There were not too many of them! Forgive my ignorance, but did anybody in country parishes vote?? (P.S. Have a good trip!)
