In my travels in the Sutherland-shire area back in 1995 I received a picture of,what was called the Birichen Sutherlands, which was taken on the farm at the Birichen, outside Dornoch, The picture was taken about 1910. Hi Frank, I was very interested to read your note on the 'Birichen picture' of the Sutherland family. I am connected with this family, see *** below, and with the help of cousins have begun to assemble the family tree. As I have not personally verified all of the names given below I cannot be sure of 100% accuracy, but I hope it is fairly correct. I have marked with an * those individuals who seem to tie in with your picture. In addition I know that John Grant had a brother James; they were the progenitors of the famous Grants butchering business's of Dornoch and Golspie. I think Robbie's wife was known as Sena, but baptised as Angusina Forbes. If the 'grandmother' is Christina Fraser, David's wife, then would the G.Grandfather be Innes Sutherland. If it is he would be 100 years old in 1910! I know he was widowed and married a second time but I don't have his date of death yet. I have a very poor quality copy of a photo taken of this family on the occasion of the Golden Wedding of David Sutherland and Christina Fraser, 25th Dec. 1913. Most of the people in your photo are in it including a dog, plus Charlie Sutherland's four young sons. Having said all that, if your GGGrandfather, Alexander Sutherland married a Catherine Matheson, I'm wondering if this is not in fact your family after all?? If there are any other subscribers who have an interest in or a connection with this family I would be delighted to hear from you on pmgray@ntlworld.com THE SUTHERLAND FAMILY OF BIRICHEN, DORNOCH. A.
