Can someone tell me how I would go about locating a death certificate if all I have is the year, and approximate place of death....for the year 1798. Donald SUTHERLAND d.1798, his wife was Christian GORDON he died of apoplexy, we are assuming he died Meikleferry area/Dornoch. thankyou, t.
There are no death certificates in Scotland prior to 1855 when statutory registration of births, deaths and marriages began. Prior to that the only place to find a death is those lucky enough to have a gravestone still standing in one of the churchyards. There are very few stones compared to the numbers who died. In a few instances there is a mention of a death in the Old Parish Registers but again they are few and far between. You can look at these registers at your local family history centre if you order the films. When a person shown on the census records after 1851 it is easier as the spouse is then shown as widow or widower which at least gives an indication of death during the preceeding ten years. Have now checked the graveyard inscriptions book and there is no stone for a Donald Sutherland and Christian Gordon in Dornoch. In Golspie there is no stone with both their names but there are at least six fallen gravestones where all that is legible is the name Donald Sutherland. Popular name.
