    3. Malcolm, Ron, The Balnacoile estate covers the ground north of the Black Water and goes up that strath for many miles. For a long time during the 20th century it was part of the Gordonbush estate. The attractive Balnacoile lodge is situated close to the junction of the Brora and Black Water rivers. Sciberscross is slightly further up Strath Brora. I will check census records for 1891 /1901 and see what I come up with. Agree with Malcolm that the Hall families are most likely related. Ron this is Balnacoile, Clyne parish not Balnakiel, Durness. My Sutherland ancestors were cleared from the strath at Balleden (sometimes Ballenlayden) only a few hundred yards further down the river. I think that members of the Hall family are buried in Brora cemetery but am not sure. Grant

    3. There is one inscription for the Hall family in Clyne Kirkton: CK189 Erected by Andrew HALL, Calrossie in memory of his brother John HALL, Sciberscross who died 22nd April 1871 aged 72 years. There does not seem to be any in Brora cemetery. There are inscriptions for the Hall family in Dornoch St Barrs (DC). DC63 In memory of Mary ANDERSON, who died at Portobello on 16th October 1858. Beloved wife of James HALL. Also the above James HALL, late of Jamaica, who died at Evelix 16th February 1862. See also DC64. DC64 In memory of Alexander HALL, seventh son, who died 20th February 1825 aged 18 years. Also of Adam HALL, 4th son, saddler, who died in Jamaica 7th February 1824 aged 24 years. Also of Somerled, 8th son, who died Aberchalder Glengarry in June 1811, Eneas, 10th son, who died July 1815, George, 5th son who died at Inveran 8th July 1823 aged 26, Somerled 9th son who died at Hiltown 11th December 1831 aged 21 years. Also of Thomas, 3rd son who died Ross-shire in 1835. also of Ellen who died 16th September 1897 aged 87 years, wife of Lewis ROSS. Children of John HALL, farmer and tacksman of Milton of Evelix and their mother Mrs Hall who died 22nd March 1846 aged 70 years. John HALL, 2nd son of John HALL, accountant, died Jamaica 7th January 1820 aged 2 days. This may help. 3. Certainly there are Hall stones in Clyne Kirkton There is a large enclosure for them with a massive stone and beside it I found a smaller one in March I was promised full details of the inscription but alas this has not been forethcoming it did refer to the Tacksman of Sciberscross Iain ----- Original Message ----- From: Grant <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2002 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [SUT] Balnacoil > Malcolm, Ron, > The Balnacoile estate covers the ground north of the Black Water and goes up > that strath for many miles.
