    1. Any thoughts?

    3. I realize that the reason I haven't heard from the list is none of you have any information to help me based on my questions posted so far. Hopefully this one is more general. Does anyone have any suggestions on obtaining birth documentation for the period roughly from 1750 to 1799. That is what I need to do now. All I have is documentation "suggesting" my Kenneth MacLeod/McLeods come from Caithness and Sutherland. I'm not sure where the were born, rumor has it Caithness but they left from Sutherland and some letters suggest they were natives of Sutherland. Any help is greatly appreciated. 3. Hi Tracy Sometimes it is better to give a fuller story about your search rather than just a name. Tell us who you are looking for, when you think they were born, the names of children they had - very helpful this when seeking parents as Scots families tended to stick to the traditional naming pattern - tell us where in the world they ended up and when they arrived there. You say they left from Sutherland - do you know where? Regarding birth documentation for the period 1750-1799 this is only available from the old Parish Registers of Scotland. Statutory registration of birth only began in 1855 in Scotland so prior to that you need to hope the child was taken to the church to be christened and even then you need to hope that the church register was filled in and still exists. The IGI has a basic copy of these parish registers and is a useful beginning. It is not the end of the world when a child is not on these registers as they can crop up later in census records, etc. So tell the story again with more detail and we will try to help.
