    3. Hi Christine, A list member wrote to me, tongue-in-cheek, asking that I take my time in preparing the notes on her family. The Andersons and Gordons were not the families of interest to her but I certainly had to write slowly in organizing this information. I found this section confusing and was forced to analyze Sage's sentences in order to understand them. Here's what he said: "About the middle of summer, after I returned from Stempster, two young female relatives of ours paid us a visit, Miss ALEXA ANDERSON and Miss FAIRLY GORDON. LEXY ANDERSON was the daughter of Mr. JAMES ANDERSON, brother of the overseer of the salmon-fishings at Invershin. He first held the farm of Rispond in the Reay Country, where he not only carried on agricultural but also commercial speculations, dealt much in the cod fishery, in which he employed much shipping, and for the accommodation of which he built a pier and formed a village at Rispond. Mr. Anderson afterwards leased the farm of Ausdale in Caithness from Sir John Sinclair. After building upon it a most substantial dwelling- house, office-houses, sheep-fanks or folds, and cultivating not a little of the surrounding moor, he gave it up in disgust and took a farm in the Orkneys, which, in a few years thereafter, he also relinquished and then retired to his native county to end his days. He was thrice married. Of his first wife I know nothing. His second wife was my cousin-germain, FAIRLY GORDON of Clerkhill, daughter of GEORGE GORDON of Pulrossie. By her he had a son CHARLES who entered the army, also a son THOMAS who resides at Stromness, a decidedly pious man. Mr. Anderson's only daughter by this marriage was ALEXA, who, along with FAIRLY GORDON, second daughter of Captain WILLIAM GORDON of Clerkhill, was our visitant at Kildonan. She was exceedingly good-humoured, and in her manners very pleasing and attractive." Mem. Dom. (1889), pp 240-241. Pop quiz: Did Sage mean that Alexa or Fairly Gordon was good-humoured? 2. Christine Stokes
    3. Hello This is a little bit of info on the Fairly Gordon of which Sage wrote: James Anderson in Kealdale, Durness, married firstly Ann Innes (1751-1783). He and Ann had at least one child: WILLIAM, born 1 October 1780 Durness (IGI). Following Ann's death in 1783 James then married Fairly Gordon (born circa 1765), a widow. This marriage took place on 23 January 1784 in Durness (IGI). They had the following children born in Durness (IGI): CHARLES, born 9 December 1784; THOMAS, born 26 May 1786; JOHN, born 9 August 1787; ALEXIE, born 30 June 1789 and JOSEPH, born 1 July 1790. Fairly Gordon died the day her baby Joseph was born. She is buried with Ann Innes in Balnakeil, Durness (GY202/149). I believe James then married again to Barbara Gordon, possibly another widow: Barbara is referred to on the Scottish Church Records as Mrs Barbara Gordon. She and James Anderson married on 9 November 1793 in Durness (SCR). They had the following children born in Durness (SCR): ELISABETH, born 22 October 1794; HUGHINA, born 7 March 1796 and her twin MARGARET; ANN, born 8 February 1798; GEORGINA MACKAY, born 8 June 1799; CAROLINE, born 6 May 1801 and RUPART, born 9 November 1802. Life was not easy then.
