I grew up on a farm orginally cleared by a Hector Sutherland of Clyne in the 1830's/40's. It was at Balfron, Colchester, NS, a few miles north of the property mentioned by Lee Sutherland. Some of the settlers who found the hills inhosptable later moved to the lower areas as the land became available therefore we may be talking about the same Hector. The Hector Sutherland on our place was married to a Miss MacLeod, daughter of Hugh MacLeod and Janet Sutherland of Clyne. Three married daughters of Hugh and Janet came to the Earltown district in 1832, (along with several other families from Clyne, Rogart and Dornoch). They were Mrs. Hector Sutherland, Helen, (Mrs. George MacKenzie of Brora, formerly Golspie), and Annie, ( Mrs. Alex MacDonald). There were born in the 1795-1805 time frame. They had a least one brother John who came to Pictou as a bachelor four or five years previous. He acquired a farm at the mouth of Pictou Harbour in the area now known as Braeshore. Descendents claim there were other near relatives who settled across the harbour mouth at Pictou Landing. Back to Hector Sutherland and spouse: In 1846 this couple lost a child while Hector was clearing a field. It was feared that she wondered off into the woods but three days later the family dog unearthed the child's hand under a large stump. The stump had fallen on top of the child when the men severed the trunk from the fallen tree. Local lore claims that they left this farm shortly afterwards due to the grief associated with it. It was thought that they moved to Pictou County at that time. Unfortunately they left the region before the times of civil and church records therefore we don't know Mrs. Sutherland's name nor the names of their children. Glen Matheson
Many thanks Glen. This seems to be the person I was looking for. Sad tale.
