I was interested to read the section on Golspie in Chris and Linda's 'Highland Hearts' site. Many years ago I bought a book in a secondhand bookshop called 'Golspie - Contributions to its Folklore'. This book, by the then librarian of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, E.W.B. Nicholson, has much more than folklore in it --- historical and pre-historical background, languages, children's games and singing games, surnames, etc. etc. I wonder if the Opies ever saw it. The children who contributed their games, stories and superstitions are named--- Nicholson was there in the early 1890s (book published 1897). One rhyme goes as follows: I've a lad at Golspie; I've a lad at sea: I've a lad at Golspie, and his number is twenty-three. Nicholson points out that the houses in Golspie are not numbered, but presumably they did have numbers in estate records, as shown in the Highland Hearts list; would these have been known by the tenants/occupiers? Could someone tell me if this book is in Golspie Library? If not, and if I can bear to part with it, I feel I should send the book there. (Hope I won't have to!) I'm assuming the library is a venerable institution with "serious" books! Sara
