    3. Sources for Scottish Genealogy, D J Steel: "Hearth Tax Records 1691 are in the Scottish Record Office (Edinburgh) and give only the names of heads of households which had hearths. However, though they give less information than the poll tax records, they cover a greater part of the country and are useful for parishes for which Poll Tax records are not extant". It then goes on to list those counties for which the Hearth Tax Records are worth looking at and Sutherland is named. Now, as you know, Malcolm has the Farr record in his book and I have just looked at his acknowledgements for a clue as to where he got this!! This is what it says: The list of 1691 appear by permission of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland (Scottish Record Office). Anybody going to Edinburgh? Does anyone know if there is copies in the Highland Council in Inverness? 3. Just looked up where we find these records and from the Acknowledgements in Malcolm's book - "The list of 1745 appears by permission of the Countess of Sutherland" - which one of us is going to ask her ladyship if we can have a look? Or, does a local person know if they are in the local libraries? Grant - Brora have one? 1. RE: SUT - research sources - Census
    2. Christine Stokes
    3. From the D J Steel book: "Censuses were held in Scotland every ten years from 1801 and detailed returns were made and kept from 1841". To me that reads as though the chances of finding much between 1801-1831 are slender indeed! The same article goes on to talk about the inaccuracies found on the 1841-91 census. In case some do not know I will repeat this: "For the 1841 census ages of adults were given in five year groups and would therefore not be expected to agree with those in the 1851 census. However, even in the latter, ages of adults may be hopelessly inaccurate, and rather more surprisingly, ages of children may not be consistent with those given ten years earlier".
