    3. To add to what Christine quoted about the 1841 census, I acquired the following description some time ago: 1.Only first and last names were given. Sometimes initials were given rather than names. Sometimes wives were listed by their maiden surnames; 2.Exact ages were recorded for persons under 15. Persons over 15 were to be reported in multiples of 5 years with the age entered to the lowest five years, e.g. a person who was 29 in 1841 would be shown as 25. However exact ages are frequently recorded; 3.The age column indicates the sex of those enumerated; 4.Occupations were often abbreviated,e.g. HLW = Hand Loom Weaver; 5.Exact birth places are not given but rather "yes" meaning born in that county; or "no" born in some other county in Scotland; "E" for England; "I" for Ireland; "F" for Foreign Parts. To me that reads as though the chances of finding much between 1801-1831 are slender indeed! The same article goes on to talk about the inaccuracies found on the 1841-91 census. In case some do not know I will repeat this: "For the 1841 census ages of adults were given in five year groups and would therefore not be expected to agree with those in the 1851 census. However, even in the latter, ages of adults may be hopelessly inaccurate, and rather more surprisingly, ages of children may not be consistent with those given ten years earlier".
