I seem to recall reading that the Columban Catholic clergy were permitted to marry and that this continued in isolated areas after the Roman Catholic church was introduced. It was also implied that marriage was overlooked in the political appointments to the higher offices, as in the case of brothers of the local Earl or the King. Would be likely that Gilbert of Moray, (Saint Gilbert who founded Dornoch Cathedral), had offspring ?
