A lesson here for today! We should all ensure we do write on the back of photographs when sending them to friends and relatives. I also have photographs of family weddings etc where I can only recognise my own immediate family, granny, etc. I often look at these trying to guess who is who. Yesterday I had 2 successes on this front I had a letter from my Grandmothers cousin ( granny died in 1945) and this Lady identified My Great Grannies Photo ! also a photo which just said " from me " 1914 I have a similar photo with the same lady named. This makes me feel that I must get as many of my elderly relatives as possible to look at photos and pass names on you can't ask them when they are gone! If any body else on the List is looking for Relatives of the Reids who lived at Crakaig I may now have some photos Iain Membership Secretary POSH Preserving Our Sutherland Heritage A Resident of Keighley West Yorkshire www.sutherlandheritage.com member's interests in Sutherland http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~suthlist/index.html ==== SCT-SUTHERLAND Mailing List ==== To check out previous messages http://archiver.rootsweb.com/SCT-SUTHERLAND-L/ ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. My wife was recently given a very old photo album from the personal effects of one her Grandmothers. The photo album covers were made of cloth corduroy with a mirrors on it - very Edwardian. It turns out that no one knew of it's existence and had been buried in her attic. It contained many family photographs mostly from the early part of the last century but also from the late 19th century since among them were some daguerreotypes. None of the 150 or so photos had any notations whatsoever and the identities of the people in the photos died with her. Very sad. Cheers - Alec
If you are going to write on the backs of your photographs, please don't use biro. There are special photo labelling pencils to use that are a very soft lead and do not indent or harm your photos. Ink has been known to leak through and destroy the very faces we have tried to preserve. I'm a Creative Memories consultant here in Western Australia and I hold classes and workshops on teaching people how to preserve their precious memories. I'm sure there are consultants out there in the UK and elsewhere who would be only too willing to teach you too.
