Do you mean 1772? If my memory is correct, the Thomas Gillespie sheep farmer was related to the architect James Gillespie Graham (who added Graham when he married an heiress). In the many graveyards there are only three which contain folks of that name, Dornoch Golf Road, Rogart and Helmsdale - none of which contain a Thomas nor any indication that they relate to the family you mention. I am currently reading 'The Highland Clearances' by John Prebble and he writes about Thomas Gillespie, a lowlander grazier who came to Glengarry in 1872. Does anybody on the list have any further information the Thomas Gillespie John Prebble was writing about? I am trying to establish whether there is any connection with my gg grandfather Thomas Gillespie who was born in Farr on 20 Apr 1818. His parents were apparently George Gillespie and Sarah McLean. He was living in Halkirk Caithness in 1839 when he married Elizabeth Laing who, was born in Roxburgh and whose parents were supposed to have brought sheep from Roxburgh to Caithness. Also all my Gillespie relations who immigrated to New Zealand appear to have worked with sheep here in New Zealand, either as shepherds, shearers or sheep farm managers. To add to my curiosity on this subject I have poems written by by my g grandfather's brother in which he writes nostalgically about Strathnaver and the McKays. I would appreciate any help anybody on the list could give on this query.
