    1. Ontario puzzle!

    3. Hi I wonder if anyone in Ontario could help prove a link between the following two families? K1660 WILLIAM MACKAY [1775-30/3/1869] married JANE GRANT [1785-22/10/1878] William, a wheelwright in Riarchar, Dornoch, and Jane (Jean) of Riarchar, married in Dornoch on 13 January 1810 (OPR). They had the following children born in Rearchar (OPR): SOPHER [male], born 1 August 1810 Dornoch; CATHERINE, born 5 September 1811; MARRON, born 11 April 1813 [died 13 June 1900 Canada] [married John Mackay]; JOHN, born 30 April 1815; JAMES, born 1 May 1817; DONALD, born 31 May 1819; WILLIAM, born 9 December 1822; MARY, born 11 January 1825; MARGARET, born 21 August 1828 Achvanbo; BARBARA, born 30 January 1831 Dornoch town. This family left Sutherland in 1835 for Canada settling at West Zorra. William and Jane are buried in West Zorra Cemetery, Canada, where the stone refers to Jane as William’s beloved wife and states that they are both natives of Dornoch. K1400 NEIL MACKAY [c1762-16/6/1852] married 1. CHRISTINA MATHESON [died circa 1800] 2. CATHERINE SUTHERLAND [c1786-8/4/1868] Neil and Christina had the following children born in Rogart, probably at Inchcape: ALEXANDER, born circa 1790 [died circa 1841-51] [married Ann Sutherland]; MARION, born circa 1790 [died 1 June 1869 Inchcape] [married Angus Sutherland] (DC); MARY, born circa 1792 [died 11 June 1866 Inchcape, Rogart] [married James Leslie] (DC) and DONALD, born 11 January 1797 Rogart (IGI). Sometime between the birth of Donald and 1804 Christina Matheson died. Neil then married Catherine Sutherland. They had the following children born at Inchcape (IGI): HELEN (Nelly), born 7 August 1805; HUGH, born 25 April 1807 [may have died infant]; ELSPET, born 5 August 1809 [died 24 March 1888 Ardochue, Rogart] [married Colin Mackay] (DC); HUGH, born 5 August 1811; JOHN, born 22 April 1813 [married Catherine – see note below]; ANN, born 12 July 1815; CHRISTIAN, born 28 November 1817 and DONALD, born 18 July 1820. Sometime around 1829 it seems that Neil and Catherine left Rogart for Zorra, Ontario. They may have gone out with Angus Mackay from Inchcape who seems to be a brother of Neil but we are uncertain of this. The Angus Mackay family are documented leaving Inchcape for Canada in a party of thirteen. They did not have that number of children so presumably this figure could include Neil and Catherine. The Sutherland Estate papers tell us that the croft was then taken over by Alexander Mackay, son of Neil. Neil and Catherine are buried in the Old Log Churchyard in Zorra where their gravestone tells that they are natives of Sutherland. The 1852 census at Zorra shows living in a log house with a family religion of Free Church, Donald Mackay, farmer, age 29, single; Christian, age 27, single and the widowed Catherine Mackay, aged 65. Living next to them in a separate household was John Mackay, age 36, his wife Catherine, age 39 and their children Neil, Catherine, William and Jane. The IGI for Ontario shows the marriage of a John Mackay to a Catherine Mackay took place on 25 December 1840 in Brock District, which covers West Zorra. The missing link – is Catherine in the first reference the lady who married John in the second? Is there anyway to prove this? Update. Hi Christine, Many thanks for that, I had seached for ages for his death and could not find it anywhere.Sheila passed it on last night, and I did put a thank you note on the list this afternoon to you, but it did not come back to me, and I have had no mail on the list since I sent it, so perhaps there is a fault. Anyway a big thank you, that has solved one problem. Here is something I was going get your opinion on!! I was looking at the census for 1852 Zorra (someone had posted it) John Mackay (son of Neil) and his wife Catherine Mackay(born Scot) their children Neil, Catherine, William, Jane. As Neil and Catherine are obviously after John's parents, could William and Jane be after Catherine's ?? So I had a look on your CD for a William Mackay with a wife Jane, and in your K1660 Wm Mackay/Jane Grant, I found that this family had gone to Zorra too, and amazingly they had a daughter Catherine just the right age to be the wife of John. Do you think this could be her ?? Or is there anyone else researching this family that might know? I do like to give you problems, don't I. Isabella. _____ Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Christine - I have the transcript for the cemetery where William McKay and Jane Grant are buried. The cemetery is properly called North Embro Cemetery and is located on Embro Road on the outskirts of the little village of Embro, West Zorra Township, Oxford Co., Ontario. The exact inscription reads: CE11a - In / memory / of / Wm McKay / who died / March 30 1869 / aged 84 years / also his beloved wife / Jane Grant / who died / Oct 22 1878 / aged 93 years / natives of Parish Dornoch / Sutherlandshire / Scotland. CE11b - In / memory of / Hellen / beloved wife of / John McKay / died Oct 29 1877 / aged / 44 years. The town was named for Edinburgh and is the old Scottish name for that city. Amond the earliest settlers of Zorra Township were a number of United Empire Loyalists who settled along the fourth concession (road) that runs north and south through Embro. In 1858 the village became a separate municipality by Act of Parliament. The first council meeting was held on November 8 of that year. Members were John Dent, reeve; Robert S. Mann, John Short, John McDonald, Donald Matheson, councillors; John Fraser, clerk; D. R. McPherson, treasurer. The population in 1861 was 551. I'll be happy to do look-ups for anyone in North Embro Cemetery. We are in and out of town, so please allow a few days for reply. Regards, Diane Geddes ------- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
