I can add another child: George McKay was born 16 Aug. 1822. George married Frances Sutherland, 8 Jul 1847. (Frances was my g-grandfather's sister. She was born 29 May 1830, in Simcoe County.) They had 13 children, several of whom are buried with Catherine Bruce and Donald McKay. George died 15 May 1902 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Frances died in 1907. The Roderick McKay - Barbara Campbell connection, I fear, is a miss. This Roderick McKay appears to have been a child of George McKay and Isabella Matheson. The family came to the Red River in 1815, along with son Robert and daughter Roberta. According to the IGI, Roderick was born 7 Jan 1797. Roberta was born 18 Jan 1800 and Robert was born 20 Apr 1803. All births were in Kildonan. Their names appear on the Hadlow passenger list immediately before those of Donald McKay's family, suggesting a connection. The Bio for Donald seems a bit confused to me. I could unscramble the difficulties by guessing that Donald's parents were Isabella Matheson and George McKay. George, then, must have been buried in or near Winnipeg, Manitoba (not Hudson's Bay). The Seven Oaks massacre occurred near the Red River settlement, present-day Winnipeg. Does this agree with the information you have for Donald's father? Let me tidy this up. 1: George McKay and Isabella Matheson. 2: Donald McKay and Catherine Bruce 3: John McKay and Christina Sutherland 3: George McKay and Frances Sutherland 2: Roderick McKay and Jane McConkey 2: Roberta McKay 2: Robert McKay Since beginning this conjecture, I have found the original source of the Bio - it is from a Feb 7, 1908 article (my type-script is marked "Free Press") about John McKay. Here are the salient bits: "A memorable walk is still clear to his mind, when his father, Donald Mackay, took him across the fields and showed him the grave of his grandfather, who was buried close to nine of the men who had been killed in 1816 at the battle of Seven Oaks." (There actually were 21 men killed at the battle.) "In the spring of 1820 a party of the Selkirk settlers determined to abandon the settlement and set out for what was then known as Canada. The party consisted of about 30 white people, including Donald Mackay and his family. The boy, John Mackay, was then six years of age, and now, 88 years afterwards, the following names of members of that party are still clear in his mind. His grandmother, Elizabeth (sic) Matheson Mackay, his uncles, Robert and Roderick Mackay ..." By Jove, I think I've got it! Since there is a 12-year gap between Donald and Roderick, we're probably missing three (or more) children of Isabella Matheson and George McKay. Isabella, Roderick, wife, Jane McConkey, and Robert are buried together at the Auld Kirk.
