I am still laughing at Kate being asked to share - really amused me. Here in the middle of England we have similar space problems and we had to purchase a plot away from my husband's family plot for his old aunt who at 94 has now decided perhaps it is time to do so. She was firstly upset that she would be split from her sister, mother, etc until I pointed out that she was within shouting distance and would spend her eternity next to a vicar!! She cheered up. Good job we can all laugh! We've lived here now for 13 years and recently decided to 'book our places' in the nearest graveyard which is on the UI peninsula at Aignish. This is supported by the community and I eventually found the person to approach. It ended up a bit 'Monty Pythonish' - me asking to book a couple of slots - and him prevaricating a bit, till he blurted out his problem - 'would we mind sharing?' Well, I tried not to laugh too loudly, but asked him what he meant. Apparently, booking a plot in the recent past, meant booking a place for 6 bodies. Nowadays, with families much smaller, this has meant lots of unused spaces! Space is running out, so hence the unusual request! I was gratified to find out there would be plenty of room for a stone, on which I shall endeavour to ensure all information will be available. I don't know where or who holds all the records - I guess the current 'keeper' has them. We all pay a subscription annually (£13), for the upkeep. There is a cemetery near Stornoway which is controlled by the Council - but this has only been the case since about 1977, and I bet the remainder of the records are with the Highland Council - somewhere! Just wanted to let you know of a current situation, which will probably drive people just as mad in the future!
