Burials. On the subject of burials, I think that it may have been down to the family to do the burials into the mid 19th century and before. Coffins would seem to have been a luxury. On our recent visit to Golspie and the area, we saw in one of the museums, (Dunrobin or Helmsdale) two body baskets which were used to carry the bodies to the grave. One was adult size and the other for a child. They were the shape of the old, long, galvanised baths people used before modern facilities. With no coffin to decay, it would explain how so many could be accommodated in one grave over a 150 year period. Mary and I have counted a probable seven in one grave at Golspie. A last word on graveyard maps. When in Golspie we were shown a photocopy of the grave yard plan of the NEW Golspie burial ground by a local historian. I did not ask where it came from, but suspect that these are the ones held at Dornoch. David Reade
