I can't help with William MACKAY's date of death in NZ sorry Christine, but just one more wee bit of information (in case you don't have it) about Adam MACKAY who died on the voyage of the "Lady Egidia". He died on 21 November 1860 aged 12 months of diarrhoea, when the ship was nearing the equator. There were 32 deaths en route, all but one of them children. 7 births also however. WILLIAM MACKAY [born 17/11/1816] married ELIZABETH GRANT [6/8/1833-17/2/1910] William, a millwright, is the son of Adam Mackay and Jannet Sutherland (MC). William was a widower, aged 44 of Inchomnie, Rogart, with a son William, when he married Elizabeth (Betsy). Betsy was from Gruids, Lairg, daughter of Alexander Grant and Margaret Murray. The marriage took place in Lairg Free Church, Gruids, on 8 February 1859 (MC). They then had a son: ADAM, born 10 November 1859 Rogart (IGI). Later, in October 1860, William and Betsy left Scotland with William and their infant son and emigrated on the "Lady Egidia" to Dunedin, New Zealand. Sadly baby Adam, in company with many other children, died on the voyage. Arriving in Dunedin William and Bessie bought "waste land" which eventually became a productive and prosperous farm. They had the following children (MACKAY) born in New Zealand: Margaret Grant, born 4 December 1861; Jessie Sutherland, born 13 January 1865; Isabella Henrietta, born 28 October 1867; Adam Alexander, born 25 August 1869 and William Grant born ?. Margaret Grant Mackay was the only child of Elizabeth Grant and William Mackay to have children. After William's death, Betsy managed the farm until she died on 17 February 1910. Would be great to find any other news of this family. Does anyone know when William Mackay died? Many thanks for this Peter. Every little helps. Sounds like a horrendous journey. We do not appreciate what these folks went through! Nowadays we jump on planes and never give a thought to the first travellers.
