Hello Listers, While at the library today, I found two excellent source books that have a lot of information about my great-great uncle John SUTHERLAND who came to Argyle, Eldon Township, Victoria County, Ontario in1884 with his wife Catherine. These books include photos and brief biographies of original settlers of the area. Though mostly settled by people from the Western Islands, there are some Sutherlandshire folks mentioned. These books are both written by Rae.B. Fleming, Argyle-A Pioneer Village and Eldon Connections. These books are locally printed so I doubt many of the listers have them. The Sutherland people are: Donald GRANT(1777-1865) and wife Catherine MACKAY emigrated 1831 with their six children, John b.1811, Hector, Andrew, Christine m. John GUNN (see below), Donald, Catherine. John married Isabelle MACKAY and is the grandfather to Dr.R.A.(Bert )MACKAY the former Canadian Ambassador to Norway! Rod GRANT b.1795 (no origins in Scotland given but , maybe) Doanld GUNN and wife Flora b.1801 who emigrated with children Robert F. b.1825 and John b.1829. Elizabeth was born in Ontario. Alex MUNRO and wife Margaret GUNN(related to above) Golspie native Donald SUTHERLAND, pensioner of 72nd Regiment of Foot, and wife Ann who emigrated in 1830 with son John and a daughter that died on the voyage. Donald is said to be a relative of a SUTHERLAND that served with Gen. Wolfe in Canada and returned to Scotland. And, I saved the best for last! Marilyn are you listening??!!?? from Farr- Andrew and John MACKAY of Aultnaharrow(sic) who came to Toronto 1836, Charles and Angus settled elsewhere. John MACKAY is another grandfather of the Ambassador! If you would like the information that is in these books, just ask, I will be more than happy to share. I feel great that I can contribute finally! Incidentally,great-great uncle's son Hugh was a major contributor of stories in the Argyle Pioneer book, which was written in the 40's and printed locally. Here is a knee-slapper he told. Canadian born Hugh, when first visting Brora to look up his relations, reported, "I got off the train and the first man I met I asked him if he knew anybody by the name of SUTHERLAND. He laughed and said, "I don't know anybody else."" Take Care, Eileen Jefferies Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! Canada Personals
