Cathy: I do not think it safe to conclude that men with an alias of "Bain" had a mother with a maiden name of Bain. The alias of Bain often originated with some fairhaired person, since that is roughly the Gaelic equivalent. I think it more likely that their father went by the alias of Bain and they continued it, or they themselves were given the alias of Bain because of their fair hair.
