    1. RE - [SUT] Armstrong/Ross 1871 Lairg
    2. Hi Jeni, I have been researching Grays in Sutherland recently and have some info. on the Armstrong family. The Armstrongs were a family of shepherds originally from the Borders of Scotland. Joseph Gordon Armstrong was christened 17 April 1833 at Creich(IGI) He was the son of Charles Armstrong and Helen Gray. Charles Armstrong was born at Jedburgh Roxburghshire on 16 June 1798(IGI) son of James Armstrong and Mary Wood. Charles died at Shinness Lairg on 25 March 1881.(DC) Charles married Helen Gray at Kildonan on 30 January 1824 (IGI). Helen Gray born circa 1805 is the daughter of George Gray and Isabella Mackay. Helen died on 2 May 1842 aged 37. She is buried in Lairg Cemetery with her mother Isabella Mackay and her sister Mary Gray. Joseph, his father Charles and grandfather James were all shepherds. George Gray was also a shepherd.(Info. from son's death certificate) Joseph and Barbara had the following children (IGI/NC81): Hugh born 22 May 1872 Lairg; Charles born 17 March 1874 Assynt; George born circa 1877 Assynt and Helen born circa 1879 Assynt. In 1881 this family are living in Stoer Assynt.(NC81) As Joseph's father is Charles it seems safe to presume that Barbara's father is Hugh. I can check the marriage of Joseph and Barbara on Tuesday at Reg. house if you like. Sheila Edinburgh Scotland
