    3. I've checked the 1841 Census in Rogart, but only found the one group of McRaes, at Torbreck. George McRae 35 ... Tenant ... N (not born in county) Helen do..... 35.............. Y (born in county) William do... 15 .............. Y Catherine do... 15 ............ Y Margaret do.... 13 ............ Y Marjory do..... 11 ............ Y Philip do.... 4 .............. Y Nehemiah(?) do. 2 .............. Y I counted 9 inhabited dwellings in Torbreck (the census totals 7 in this area) and 2 uninhabited properties. The Census was taken 6th June 1841, and Remarks in Rogart include the following: "About twenty of the inhabitants of this district were absent on the night of sixth of June, attending Preaching in the Parish of Kincardine, Ross-shire; their names are not given here. "The designation 'Tenant' which occurs so frequently in this parish denotes -Occupier of a few acres of land, and earning a subsistance, chiefly therefrom. This class might, with propriety, be included among Agricultural Labourers. It is also noted that married women and widows generally gave their maiden name, but these were "corrected" asnd the Husband's surname given. Hope this helps - let me know if you need more. I have noted Enumeration district, and Heads of neighbouring households. Regards Denise, Sutherland, Scotland

    3. Denise Many thanks. You have made one gentleman in New Zealand a very happy man. This is the second person this week we have been able to help simply through the generous giving of time from people based in Sutherland. Thanks to you all. For interest most of the other families at Torbreck in the 1841 were related to myself, Mackenzies, Mackays etc. In the 1841 census across the Dornoch and Rogart areas - and possibly across all of Sutherland for all I know - there were very many men missing! It is said locally that they objected to this first 'proper' count of people and the relevant questions so took to the heather for the night! I believe this to be true as in many instances they are all home in 1851!
