Thanks to Adair for the inscription from New Zealand. I am now collecting inscriptions for those buried overseas where the gravestone states native of Sutherland or native of Dornoch, etc. Also where it is known that the buried person was born in Sutherland. One day I hope to have a section on our web site for these important stones. If anyone has any of these with photographs if possible please send them to me. Erected to the memory of DONALD GUNN, Native of Sutherlandshire, who departed this life at Taieri Lake January 27 1857, aged 27 years. This grave is in the HAMILTONS CEMETERY, high up on the northern end of the Rock and Pillar Range in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. In the 1860's, gold was discovered in this area and Hamiltons was a thriving township up until the turn of the 19th century. Now there is nothing there except the gold tailings turned into a big lake (now a water resevoir), some old remnants of domestic gardens, and the cemetery which is surrounded by a magnificent dry stone wall and looks down over the vast Taieri Plain. The graves have been catalogued and the cemetery cleaned up. It was covered with ivy and periwinkle and nettles. We wish now we had written down more of the inscriptions as there were others from Sutherlandshire (we'll go back one day). This GUNN grave we did note and it may be of interest to someone.
