Hello again, We visited Sutherland in 1993. Lynn, Sandy, Aimée, and I were the only Sutherlands in Sutherland! Our recollection is that it was named for one of Captain James Cook's crew who died within sight of land. His name was Forbie Sutherland, from the Orkneys I believe. There is a plaque to tell this and information on Captain Cook's having landed. If I am correct, it is claimed that Forbie was the first white person to be interred in Australia.
