I spoke to one recently-arrived (and clearly anxious to integrate) Pommie in Brisbane who said "Strewth!" she spluttered. "Who does she think she is --- Kylie Minogue?" Closer to home, in a hostelry just off the Chingford Bypass, I found a somewhat battered member of POSH who muttered "Poshpyshe? I'll give you Poshpyshe" --- which I took to be a vote of support for the Society. I am less sure about two members from South Glamorgan who both reacted with the same Welsh word, which was at least as long as the name of that village in Anglesey, but which, despite monetary incentives, they adamantly refused to translate for me --- all I could pick out was the word 'diawl', which the editor's Welsh granny says is extremely rude and means 'devil'.
