On second thoughts, no real invasion of privacy! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sara Thomas" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 14, 2002 7:24 PM Subject: [SUT] Fw: Scottish Databases There seem to be useful databases here, but you have to register before you can gain access, and this involves giving various personal details, which may put potential users off. (Can't decide, myself.) Sara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Robertson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 13, 2002 9:45 PM Subject: Scottish Databases A number of Scottish databases and books are accessible for searching at http://www.scotsfind.com. There are no products for sale at the site, no ads, etc. Access to the databases requires registration and that you have Acrobat Reader on your computer. The databases are in the PDF format and are searchable using the Acrobat Reader Search command. Some of the databases are not formatted as I would like (e.g., word wrap and symbol [esp. £] errors) due to a change of software. I will gradually correct such problems. Databases and books available on-line at present are: 1. Register of Edinburgh Apprentices, 4 volumes, covering 1583 - 1800. 2. Roll of Edinburgh Burgesses and Guild-Brethren, 3 volumes covering 1406 - 1841 3. Edinburgh Marriage Register, 1595 - 1800. 3 volumes 4. Consitorial Processes and Decreets, 1658-1800. 1 volume of court cases relating to marriage, legitimacy, divorce, etc. 5. The Commissariot Record of Inverness, Register Of Testaments, 1630 - 1800. 6. The Guildry of Edinburgh. Contains the Dean's and the Guild's account books with burgess and wife names not found in the Roll above. Also, contains Guildry records of Aberdeen. 7. Notices From the Local Records of Dysart. This volume was compiled from various records belonging to the Burgh and Parish of Dysart. Covers approx. 1534 - 1697. Also contains entries for Kinghorn, Kinglassie, Kirkcaldy and Wemyss. 8. The Presbytrie Booke Of Kirkcaldie, 23 pages of introductory material and 420 pages from the Booke. Covers the period 1630 - 1653 (In progress). 9. A Dissertation On The Origin Of The Scottish Language, by John Longmuir, A.M., LL.D. An academic essay on the origin of the Scottish language, and hence the Scottish peoples. Extracted from Jamieson's Dictionary of the Scottish Language. 10. Glossary. Occupations, definitions, explanations and abbreviations. Unfamiliar words and terms and abbreviations from the databases are pasted into the glossary and then definitions sought. 11. Scottish Surname Variants. A listing of variant spellings of surnames. Useful in deciphering difficult-to-read OPR spellings. A work in progress. 12. Dryburgh and Variants Scottish Births and Baptisms: 1578 - 1860. Dryburgh and Variants Scottish Marriages: 1628 - 1853. 13. Kinloch Scottish Marriages 1603 - 1859. 14. Lumsdale Scottish Births & Baptisms 1633 - 1852 Lumsdale Scottish Marriages 1641 - 1853. The databases are searchable, but not copyable or printable. You must extract the data by hand. I hope these are helpful to you.
