Hello Peter, I am also interested in early Matheson data. I posted an entry just prior to yours, but in essence, I have a Dugald Matheson, son of Murdoch and Mary Matheson, born c.1800 or slightly earlier - where? On one census entry he states Skye, but on others he is stated as born Lochbroom. He certainly ended up in Lochbroom, and was on the Summer Isles Tanera Mor, where he raised a family. I could not find sign of Murdoch, his father on Tanera at least. Like you, I love the area north of Ullapool. I came to the Western Isles - escaping from London with my husband, in 1987. Never regretted it! Would like to know how you got your early Matheson information as it has been suggested to me that the Mathesons on Skye were moved to Tanera to 'support' the tacksman. Seems there might be a connection within the Matheson family somewhere? Look forward to hearing from you.
