Hi List Seems very quiet on here this week! Can anyone in Ontario help out with information on the following? Neil Mackay married to Catherine Sutherland had the following children born in Rogart, quite possibly at Ardchue: ALEXANDER, born circa 1790 [died circa 1841-51] [married Ann Sutherland]; HELEN (Nelly), born 7 August 1805; HUGH, born 25 April 1807; ELSPET, born 5 August 1809 [died 24 March 1888 Ardochue, Rogart] [married Colin Mackay]; HUGH, born 5 August 1811; JOHN, born 22 April 1813; ANN, born 12 July 1815; CHRISTIAN, born 28 November 1817 and DONALD, born 18 July 1820. As their daughter Elspet married and died in Rogart we had assumed that Neil and Catherine did also. However, looking at the Old Log Church cemetery inscriptions on the internet last night I found a gravestone for Neil and Catherine this Neil and Catherine? Neil is not a common Mackay name in Rogart and the chances of finding two couples with these names seem slender to me. Does anyone have access to census records for Zorra did the Neil and Catherine on the gravestone have children with the above names? Any help most appreciated. Hi All, Zorra (East & West) had a whole host of Mackay's present for the 1871 Census - there were 82 recorded and there weren't too many ladies included, so they might have only recorded single and widowed ladies. The entries are shown as mainly Presbyterian/Farmers. The oldest were two ladies, Mayan & Jane, both 84/b. Scotland. There was no Christian but (1) Christena 65/b. Scotland and (2) Christy 48/b. Scotland. One Neil shown as a farm lab./45/b. Scotland. The oldest Alexander was 78/b. Scotland and the youngest was 21/b. Ontario. There were two Johns - the elder was 52/b. Scotland and the younger was John Sutherland McKay/29/b. Ontario. Does this help - or just confuse the situation? BW Brenda T. Hi Christine, I just had a look at the West Zorra Census 1851 that is in hardcopy at the Woodstock library. There are no places of birth with this census. I cannot find Neil in either the west or east Zorra census. Since he died in 1852 I am wondering if he may have died just prior to the census??? I did find a Catherine MacKay age 65 living with Donald MacKay age 29 and Christian age 27. Is it possible that Catherine was living with her children upon the death of her husband Neil. The children's ages are a little off but I guess that is not unusual. I also found a John Mackay age 36 and wife Catherine whose oldest two children were Neil age 10 and Catherine age 8. Could John be a brother of Donald and Christian- Children of Neil and Catherine MacKay??? Neil is a very uncommon name in the MacKay of Zorra too!! That is all for now.
