    3. Hi I'm a new lister, Peter Grant of London UK (on working holiday from New Zealand). Was around on various Rootsweb lists last year before leaving for a 7 month holiday. Started the holiday with the delightful experience of taking my wife's NZ-resident Scottish-born mother back to Nairn for the first time since she emigrated with her parents as a 16 yr old 40 years ago! It was great. Spent a week or so in Sutherland, and that part of the west coast of the Highlands is one place that really reminds me of the part of NZ I'm from. We just love the Assynt area. Interests: MATHESON Hugh b abt 1780 Shinness, Lairg, SUT, d 1817 Eadar a'Chalda, Assynt, ground officer for the Sutherland Estate at the time of the evictions (!), m Janet McBEATH (b 1784 Wick, d 1857 Torbreck, Assynt). Children: Neil MATHESON (in Eddrachillis then Stornoway), William MATHESON (in Scourie), Donald MATHESON (in Torbreck, Assynt), George MATHESON (unknown) and Hughina MATHESON (m Lachlan MACDONALD, Lochinver, Assynt). CORBETT Alexandrina (Lexy) b abt 1808 Oldshoremore, Eddrachillis, SUT. TAYLOR in Kinbrace, Kildonan, SUT 1860s onwards. GRANT in Grimachary, Kildonan, SUT 1780s onwards. Look forward to hearing from anyone with interests in these areas. Peter Grant

    3. Hi Morag and Peter Welcome to the list. Glad to hear you enjoyed Scotland as much as I know I will enjoy your country when I get there next year. Really looking forward to that trip. Is this the family information on the Grants of Grimachary you are after? There are quite a few people on this list who can fill in gaps for you on the Grants. Because I have literally hundreds of references I number them. Only way I can keep track! G155/1 DONALD GRANT married ANN FRASER [born circa 1740] Donald, a farmer, and Ann had the following children: JOHN, born circa 1770 Achnamoine, Kildonan [died 15 June 1855 Gremachary - bachelor]; GEORGE, born 1782 Anchimerch, Kildonan [died 1 May 1857 Gremachary - grass keeper in Kildonan] [married Helen Fraser - see G235] and ALEXANDER - see G041 . John Grant lived for sometime at Bad-an-t-seabhaig and then with his brother George in Breacachadh, Kildonan. He is buried with his brother George at Achancean near Kinbrace, Kildonan. He was described as "a meek and loveable Christian". Donald Grant and Ann Fraser were strictly religious. G235 GEORGE GRANT married HELEN FRASER [1782-1/5/1857] [born 1817] George of Gremachory (Ghriamachary), Kildonan, was born in Feith-na-fala near Achnamoine, Kildonan, son of Donald Grant and Ann Fraser - see G155/1. He and Helen (Helene) married on 15 July 1842 at Breacachadh, Kildonan (OPR). Helen is the daughter of Alasdair Fraser or Beag. Being a very religious family, they observed the Sabbath very rigidly. George Grant was very hospitable to men who tramped the countryside - when staying with him, some appreciated his strict religiousness while others resented it. George served in the 93rd Highlanders and was at the Battle of New Orleans where he lost an arm. He died in 1857 at Greamachary and is buried with his brother John at Achancean near Kinbrace, Kildonan. He and Helen had the following children born in Kildonan (IGI): ANNE, born 1 August 1843 [married Alexander Rutherford - had daughters - emigrated to Australia]; KATHARINE, born 12 December 1844 [died 28 September 1865] (GY); DONALD, born 18 March 1847 [married Elizabeth Clark]; ALEXANDER, born circa 1850 [died 22 September 1922] [married Margaret Taylor - see G052]; WILLIAM, born 1852 [married Kate McLeod]; GEORGE JOHN, born 16 December 1857 [died 16 April 1862] (GY). Helen Fraser died in Evelix, Dornoch. The family are buried in Invershin (GY68/11). (Donald Fraser, a relative, signed George's death certificate.) G052 ALEXANDER GRANT married MARGARET TAYLOR [1850-22/9/1922] [1857-12/12/1946] Alexander, a farmer in Evelix, Dornoch, was born at Gremachary, Kildondan, son of George Grant and Helen Fraser - see G235. He and Margaret, who was born in Elgin, married in Elgin on 30 September 1879. Margaret is the daughter of William Taylor and Margaret Forsyth. At the time of her wedding Margaret was the housekeeper at Kinbrace. At this time Alexander was farming at his home in Gremachary (Greamachary). They had the following children: CATHERINE (Kate), born 1880 Griamachary [died 12 March 1963 London] (GY): MARGARET FORSYTH, born 22 December 1886 Evelix [died 18 January 1982] [married John Murray - see G417] (BC); DONALD, born 21 June 1889 Evelix [died 29 November 1982 London] (GY); CHRISTINA, born 1895 [died 23 January 1916]; WILLIAM ALEXANDER, born 1897 [died 29 January 1926] [married Mary Mackay - see G495]; WILLIAM, died infant; HELEN, born 1893 [died 12 November 1925] [married Archibald Auld Ure - see G248]. In 1881 Alexander and Margaret were living at Gremachary with their baby daughter, Catherine. Alexander and his wife are buried in Dornoch (GY182/281). On the other names you mention you speak of Torbreck, Assynt - could you mean Torbreck in Rogart? 3. Hi Peter Great to see your name appear on this list - sometime ago I found a message of yrs when you still lived in NZ - old address was a chartered accountant address - but by that time you had taken flight to parts overseas so am anxious to see if your family might have a link to mine My mother in law - Mina Matheson came from Edinburgh but had family connectons in Oldsmoreshore Her mother was Williamina (Mina) Corbert and she married James Munro and they lived at Achlyness overlooking Loch Inchard - incidentally the house is still there in Achlyness. Willamina's parents were John Corbett and Betty (Betsy) Paterson married at Fodderty on 23 December 1830 Believe their childlren to be: John, Elizabeth, Alexandrina, Ann, Isabella, Williamina and Murdoch. My Alexandrina born 10 February 1844. It would be great to hear from you - any info gratefully received Regards Zelda Matheson, Dunedin, New Zealand ----- Original Message ----- From: Morag Godfrey-Grant & Peter Grant <morag&peter@godfrey-grant.freeserve.co.uk> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 8:19 AM Subject: New lister interests > Hi I'm a new lister, Peter Grant of London UK (on working holiday from New > Zealand).
