    1. Corbet from Eddrachillis
    2. Morag Godfrey-Grant & Peter Grant
    3. Hi Zelda Great to hear from someone from my home town of Dunedin, New Zealand!! I lived my first 25 years in Dunedin until 1990 when I finished university and went to my first law job up in Wellington. Was raised in Doon St, Waverley, Dunedin. Dad, Fergus Grant, died at 48 and 8 years later Mum married Tom O'Connell (one of the O'Connells from Macraes) who died 4 yrs later. Mum is now living in "pensioner-ville" (as my sister and I call it!!) in St Kilda, Dunedin. Where are you living? Down to business!! I have not seen any mention of Corbets in Eddrachillis before 1783, but this does not mean to say I have looked very hard. As you probably know, there is a dearth of records. Nonetheless, here are a few interesting notes: Durness Marriage Registers (published by Scottish Record Society): 18 Dec 1783 John CORBET in Ceansalic, Eddrachillis and Marion Mackay alias nin Dhonilvoy herdman in Shinniss. National Library of Scotland - Gordon-Cumming Papers – General Deposit 175 6 Oct 1731 General Service of Jean Bayne, wife of Donald Mackay in Kilestrom of Eddrachillis as heir portioner of provision to the deceased Alexander Corbat sometime of Arboll her grandfather on her mother’s side (Jean being only child procreate between Alexander Bayne farm servant at Mill of Inch and Margaret Corbat daughter procreat between the said Alexander Corbat and his wife Elizabeth Bayne). Next entry allows the following to be re-constructed: Alex Corbat = Elizabeth Bayne / Christian Corbat = Colin Mackenzie of Saunachan / Roderick Mackenzie of Saunachan (eldest lawful son) / Christian Mackenzie (heir as well as Jean Bayne above) = Alexander Mackenzie in Blairnibie in Strathconnon. Also found an Eddrachillis Corbet in the discharge records of the Chelsea Pensioners at PRO Kew: WO97/1113: Private Donald Corbet b parish of Adrogha (sic - Eddrachillis) in or near the town of Caithness in the county of Sutherland; enlisted in First Royal Regiment of Veterans at Naas in county of Kildare on 25 Dec 1821 age 36 for unlimited service. Prior Service in 93rd Foot 13 years 238 days and then First Veteran Battn 4 yrs 21 days. Total service 18 yrs+. Discharged 8 Apr 1826 in consequence of disbandment….Conduct good…. signed “x”. Aged about 40 years, 5’7”, brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, by trade a labourer. Discharge given under seal at Athlone this 24 Apr 1826. Family: wife and 2 children. Future residence Castletown, Co. Cork. And his first discharge records WO97/1015: Stamped at Royal Hospital, Kilmainham 28 Nov 1821 This is to certify that Private Donald Corbet born in the parish of Addrachilis in or near the town of Dornoch in the county of Sutherland enlisted in this Regiment at Addrachilis in Sutherland 16 Mar 1808 at age 21 for limited service. Service: 93rd Highlanders 16 Mar 1808 – 8 Nov 1821 = 13 yrs 238 days. That by the authority of the Adjutant General’s circular letter dated at Dublin 27 Aug 1821 he is hereby discharged in consequence of being supernumary to the establishment. Badly wounded at New Orleans 8 Jan 1815 by a grape shot which lodged in his right thigh and was extracted. Conduct has been but indifferent but from his having been seriously wounded before (-) on 8 Jan 1815. I beg leave to recommend him. Signed “x” his mark. 35 years of age, 5’6”, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, labourer. Given under my hand at Ennis this 8 Nov 1821…… It is very annoying that the parish registers don't start until about 1809/10 or so - just after the time that Alexandrina/Alexina/Lexy Corbet was born at Oldshoremore. The Oldshoremore Corbets appeared to be a fairly tight-knit bunch in any event; I recollect there were only a few families of Corbets from 1809/10? and they were either at Oldshoremore or Oldshorebeg. They must all be the same bunch - perhaps John Corbet/Marion Mackay (mentioned above were the progenitors???) I note you have a Murdoch and an Alexandrina in your family - they are Oldshoremore Corbet names. Alexandrina Corbet (Morag's ancestor) was born Oldshoremore c1808, married Neil Matheson at Eddrachillis 1833, and had John, Elizabeth, Hugh, Dolina and Neil (plus possibly some others - Neil Matheson Sr was a journeyman mason so the kids were born from Eddrachillis to various places in Caithness to Stornoway (Morag's ancestor Neil in 1852). Do you have any references to Corbets from records etc? I might be able to dig out my extracts of Corbets from the Eddrachillis OPRs if you do not have them already? Look forward to hearing from you. 3. Hi Peter & Morag Thank you for your reply. I have very little information on the CORBETS of Eddrachillis so would be grateful for any data you may have. Glad to see you are from "Speights Country & the House of Pain" ie Dunedin NZ - I live in Fairfield. Best wishes from Zelda on a very cold frosty night from Dunedin ---- Original Message ----- From: "Morag Godfrey-Grant & Peter Grant" <morag&peter@godfrey-grant.freeserve.co.uk> To: <SCT-SUTHERLAND-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2001 11:38 AM Subject: Corbet from Eddrachillis > Hi Zelda > Great to hear from someone from my home town of Dunedin, New Zealand!!
