Thanks Test message came through and I have been receiving mail. I was at the PRO in Kew the other day and came across a notebook in a bundle of original papers at WO13/3629 which I photocopied, but the writing has come out rather faint. It is the pay list and return of the Sutherland Local Militia when assembled for training at Dornoch from Wednesday 14 July to Thursday 29 July 1813. 410 privates listed (only 18 John Mackays!!), 13 drummers, 20 corporals, 1 drum major (Andrew Gray), 20 sergeants, 1 sergeant major (Hugh Murray), Quarter Master (Angus Fraser), surgeon (William Ross), adjutant (John Munro), 5 second lieutenants ( Alexander Anderson, Edgar Sutherland, Niel Mackay, George McKenzie, George Taylor), 7 lieutenants ( John Mackay, Alexander Mackay, George Munro, John Campbell, John McKay, William McPherson, William Munro), 6 captains (Kenneth Mackay, William McCulloch?, William Munro, Duncan Sutherland, William Taylor, Thomas Robertson?), 1 major (Dugald Gilchrist) 1 Lt.Colonel (Alexander Sutherland) and Earl Gower as Colonel. One of these days I might get round the transcribing the 410 privates, but we have just thrown ourselves into the traumas of moving house!! Meanwhile if anyone wants me to check for a name let me know. Sue Cardiff
