He had been on his way from Banff, "where he had been for some time past", to Cromarty where he had a passage to America. Leslie had been alighting from the back while the coach was at speed, a common practice at the time. The coach drove on without taking notice. He died a week or so later. It appears that Leslie had a berth on the "Headleys" which sailed on Monday 16 April from Cromarty for Quebec with 230 passengers mostly from Banffshire and Morayshire. The next ship to leave Cromarty was the Sylvanus which was expected at Cromarty between 5 and 10 May The voyage appears to have been organised by William Allan & Son Cromarty. Intending emigrants could obtain a berth from a network of agents, including two in Sutherland: John Fraser, merchant in Dornoch and William Gordon, at Pittentrail, Rogart. The Sylvanus appears to have sailed for Pictou and Quebec on 12 May. I am assuming that the Sylvanus included passengers from Sutherland? Malcolm Bangor-Jones
