Hello all Am trying to locate parents of James McKay, said to be born in the Parish of Dornoch between the above dates. He emigrated to Canada in 1835 with the 71st Highland Light Infantry Regiment, married first a Mary Peck (who died in Odelltown Lower Canada (now Quebec)in 1845. Mary gave him two sons, Alexander born 1842 and James born 1845. James then remarried an Elizabeth Barbour in Woodstock, Ontario in 1849 and she had two children in Canada, Mary Grace born 1850 and Robert Barbour born 1852. Her parents were Robert Barbour and Mary Grace Barbour nee Orr. They were found in the 1861 census living in a Log cabin in East Zorra township, Oxford County. Ontario. Obviously the idea of becoming rich quick appealed because James brought his wife and children to Melbourne, Victoria Australia where more children were born Georgina Mitchell McKay in 1858, and William Stevenson McKay in 1859. They then travelled to Invercargill, New Zealand where my gg grandfather David William McKay was born in 1867. On James Rose McKay's death certificate in 1893 his father was stated to be Alexander McKay a blacksmith. The family bible states that Alexander McKay married an Anne Sutherland - that Alexander died in 1852 (where?) and Anne in 1826 (again where?). Can find no record of them on the IGI but they were listed as Methodists in Canada and later Baptists in NZ. Does James have any siblings? Regards from Christchurch, New Zealand Mary-Ann Farr
