    1. Shipping lists Sutherlandshire - Pictou Nova Scotia

    3. Hi one and all George Maclaren's book called The Pictou Book ( on the shelves at the NS Archives) has all sorts of wonderful lists including one of all the known ships that called in Pictou from UK and USA from 1767- 1849. Date -Port of emigration- # of passengers and length of voyage were also given where known. I transcribed these up to 1822 complete and then runnng low on time I only noted Scottish ones from 1822-1830 If there is interest I can do the last 19years. There 37 ships listed up to 1822. In addition he has quite a few passenger lists including the Dove and Sarah. The "Sarah" sailed from Fort William in 1801 with 350 passengers (50 children died of smallpox enroute). The Dove sailed from Aberdeen in 1801 also with 219 passengers. However neither of these had Sutherlandshire residents as the passengers were listed by community and the names were not in anyway familiar... not a trace of Golspie, Dornoch, Helmsdale , Rogart etc etc. or the smaller often unspellable communities that have been floating around this site. I found this book about 30 mins before closing time so I will go back and explore further. Also I will check the other standard for this area History of Pictou County by George Patterson which I have used in the past for a non Sutherlandshire topic. I was keeping my eyes open for MURRAY's for Ivan, specifically James and Walter and found little that was not already known. A list of baptisms by Rev James MacGregor who was the itinerant Preacher for an enormous district from fairly early days of the settlement included only one Murray --- 1788 Peggy daughter of WALTER MURRAY.. Apparently there are two versions of the Hector passenger list... one refered to as the Mackay and the other the Wm Mackenzie. Not a lot of difference between the two apparently but Maclaren prefers the Mackay one as it includes the children under two years of age. The adult list contains Walter, Christopher, Abigail, Adam ,Margaret and James whilst the under 2 category had only a" WALTER MURRAY a child of Elizabeth". This puzzled me somewhat as one would have imagined the father's name would have been listed ..I find it hard to believe that the agents would have encouraged a single woman with child to tackle this trip and she wasn't listed in the adults! Maybe little Walter was an orphan brought along by Uncle Walter or James. The children from 2-8 years included Christopher and George Murray. I checked a list of Land Grants for 1730-1937 Ref# MFM 12927 1784 Murray James et al.....................11,784 acres Bay of Fundy Sunbury Book 15 page 44 1792 Murray Walter et al.....................10,600 acres Gulf Shore Pictou and Antigonish Co. Book 19 page 112 1792 Murray Walter and others............10,600 acres Merigomish Pictou Co. Book 19 page 112 1813 Murray James et al .....................2,500 acres District of Pictou Halifax Co. Book D page 7 1816 Murray James et al......................2,000 acres District of Pictou Halifax Co. Book F page 118 1828 George Murray ............................ 100 acres Gulf Shore Pictou Co. Book N page 68 1828 James Murray ............................ 100 acres Pictou Book N page 38 1868 James Murray..........#8380.............100 acres Plainfield River John Pictou Co Book 38 page 157 1869 James Murray ..........#8976.............100 acres West Branch River Colchester Co. Book 40 page 182 This table looks quite neat on my page but I am afraid that by the time it is emailed half way around the world it will be somewhat scrambled. Note that New Brunswick was part of Nova Scotia at one point and that the 1784 grant is probably the North Shore of the Bay of Fundy now known as the Sunbury Shores region of New Brunswick and a helluva long way from Pictou in those times. Also note Pictou district was in Halifax county for several years. I would hazard a guess that George and James (1828 grants) could be sons of Walter. The only way to sort out all those James' is to see if any of the Petitions have survived. They include a wealth of personal history but I don't know what % of these old ones are still around I will ask. Enough for this email. Liz
