The Rosehall estate contained two townships with the name Altass: Meikle Altass, now known as Altassmore, (meaning big Altass) and Little Altass. There were no Urquharts in Altass in the 1820s and early 1830s. A rental for about 1842 which appears in a Private Act of Parliament of 1847 lists Alexander Urquhart as one of about 6 small tenants in Meikle Altass. Alexander had about 16 acres and paid just over £9 rent, which makes it a fair rather than a small holding. There were no Urquharts there by 1875 (I have not checked the 1871 census). It would be very interesting to know when the family left and where they went to? The reason I ask is that the estate was bought in 1870 by three speculators who proceeded to sell land to the crofters. Some crofters refused and left. (The estate had been sold by Lord Cranstoun to James Matheson of Achany, the man who had made a huge fortune out of the opium trade, in 1844).
