    3. Highlight of the year must be the appearance of the Old and First Statistical Accounts of Scotland on the net --- http://edina.ac.uk/cgi/StatAcc/StatAcc.cgi (see under Parish Lists) All I've read so far is the first account for Criech parish --- fascinating! I'm not so sure about England's answer to Scots Origins: www.englishorigins.com Doesn't seem to be very productive/extensive so far --- or am I wrong? Sara

    3. Hi Sara Must agree with you about the Statistical Accounts being on line. They are great. I have a copy of the first accounts of Sutherland and Caithness and have enjoyed reading that for years. Now, I keep on trying to find time to complete reading the later version on the net. I sadly must agree with you also on the English Origins but it is early days so may improve. In England married women always used their married name. This is a major drawback when researching. The Scots had it the right way where women still used their own name. To add to what is on the internet right now I have to say that I am becoming quite alarmed at the ridiculous number of "about" births and marriages that are popping into the IGI. I questioned that as it appears that they do not really have any facts and just put "born about 1780 in Sutherland". As many folks do use and rely on the IGI on line I think it is important to realise that this "about" business is not proven fact. I now quote from a recent letter send to "Family Tree Magazine": "Up to the issue of 1988 IGI entries were largely based on facts i.e. actual events that had taken place and were recorded in the various registers, although the entries still needed to be checked at the primary source. Now one finds many entries which state "about", these are the result of inadequate research by people who have sumbitted information to the Church. They can be more misleading than helpful, especially to those who do not, or cannot, check for a primary source." Since about 1990 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been inputting information to the IGI which has been submitted by researchers. The church issued guidelines as to what data should be sumbitted, but people do not always abide by these. The moral of this story - ignore all reference to "abouts" on the IGI. I certainly will.
