I am new to this list and would be interested to hear from anyone with information about Lachlan ROSS, grieve/bailiff for Alexander CLARKE at Eriboll, Durness. Lachlan was born in Kincardine, Ross in 1791 and died aged 88. His first wife was Anne FRASER (1791-1837) and his second wife was Hannah MATHER, born in 1815 at the height of the Clearances as the illegitimate daughter of Thomas MATHER (manager of a sheep farm who came from Northumberland) and Kit McKENZIE, thought to be in his employ. Lachlan and Hannah had 6 children (Lachlan had 5 from his first marriage) The eldest, John Clark ROSS (b.1841) and his younger brother William (b.1850) emigrated to Texas and founded Rossville in Atascosa County. Annie Fraser ROSS is our ancestor and moved to London after the death of Lachlan in 1879 to work in service for a Mary Elizabeth JONES. She later married Alexander MACKAY (also from Sutherland) and settled in Glasgow. Thomas died aged 15 and is buried with Lachlan and Hannah in Arnaboll Burial Ground I would be interested to hear from any descendants of the other two children James (bap.12 Aug 1844 Durness Free Church) Alexander Robert (born 23 Feb 1856 Eriboll Sue Mackay South Wales
