Hi: Looking for info on my grandfather's family. 1. Alexander ROSS, married Margaret MURRAY, 09 Jan 1853, Creich. Children: Alexander (my great grandfather), Isabella, Helen, Margaret, Robina, James, Murdo. I think Helen & Margaret were twins. 2. Alexander ROSS, born in Creich, 19 Mar 1856, married Jane SUTHERLAND on 26 Dec 1879, Dalchork, Lairg. Children: John, Margaret Henderson, Alexander, Mary, Donald (my grandfather), Peter & Barbara. Alexander, was married to Mary Sinclair also, I believe. I think Jane SUTHERLAND died when Barbara (b. abt 1892) was a baby. 3. Jane SUTHERLAND's parents: John Sutherland & Margaret Henderson. Of course these first names and surnames have to be the most common names in this part of Scotland, which doesn't make finding any of them any easier. Hello Linda I have some information on the Murray side of your family. I researched this family a number of years back while putting together my book on Murray Families in Sutherland. Briefly, Margaret Murray was born 15 September 1826 at Corshellach, Creich, daughter of Alexander Murray and Helen Murray of the same place. She and Alexander, a tenant at Corbuie, married as you say in 1853. They had the following Ross children, all born at Corbuie: Isabella, born and died 6 January 1855; Alexander, you know about; Donald, born 28 October 1857; Margaret born 12 December 1859, died 1860; and her twin Helen, died also in 1860; Robina, born 2 March 1861, died April 1861; Mary, born 11 September 1863; James, born 20 December 1865, died 1866; Murdoch, born 15 September 1867. In 1881 Margaret Murray was shown on the census as a widow, farming seven acres. Her daughter, Mary, was with her plus son Murdo. Margaret's mother Ellen, 92 and blind, was also with them. Ellen Murray died later that same year. Margaret's parents were also at Corbuie and Corshellach - I think it is the same place. They had nine children - will email you full details. Helen Murray was born 11 December 1800 daughter of Robert Murray and Margaret Murray of Langwell, Rogart. I will send you details of this family also. Hope this helps.
