Thank you Christine, Your response cleared a couple of mysteries. Would it be reasonable to assume that during any period, not all records were kept? Duncan's brother or cousin, John was supposed to have been younger, yet I have never found a record for him until his marriage to Janet Murray in the Dornoch area. Second point, might a record of marriage have been recorded in two parishes, one for the groom, the other for the bride? This arises from the entries of marriage for John Sutherland and Janet Murray, on or about the date of April 24/25, 1829. He was John Sutherland Lothbeg, she Janet Murray,Berichan, Dornoch. This entry is from the reel including Loth records. There are also entries for Kildonan and Dornoch for the same day. This is the only John Sutherland/Janet Murray record for Sutherland in a 40 year period! Hi everyone Please forgive me if some of these answers seem old - I am trying to catch up on a huge batch of emails. The dreaded work has taken all my time during the past month but hopefully things will now calm down. Donald - regarding records - there are periods when no records exist. I always work on the assumption that most folks will turn up sometime - if not at birth then census, marriage, death. When two people from different parishes married the Banns were normally called in both parishes not always on the same day. This is what the IGI show - Banns and not the actual marriage. However it is fair to say that 99.9% of Banns called ended in a marriage. The OPRs generally show the actual marriage.
