Hello Christine, My story has far too many gaps in it yet for inclusion in the book! Some basic stuff missing - like where Ewan MCMILLAN came from before he turned up in Sutherland and fathered two children and married one of the mothers. And I still don't know on which ship John came to Australia. BUT these little things will fall into place eventually. With the wonderful help from the list, I have Ewan's occupation of foxhunter. Other sources he is also a Shepherd and Gamekeeper. But, given time, I reckon I could come up with a decent tale. I would be rapt to be able to be included... and then of course I would have to buy several copies for the family! You start writing Christine. None of us have the perfect story with every question answered. We all have blanks but still a story worth the telling. When the book is published and selling around the world who knows - maybe other descendants of your family will be able to fill the gaps! Well we can all hope. I have decided to have a go at doing a story. Helped this week by finding John McMILLAN's missing Irish wife. She remarried two years after his death. She had no more children (to anyone) after the death of Flora McKay - her second daughter, aged 1 year. Apart from Flora McKay the 2nd, who was already on the way. Being before civil reg. here in Victoria, I'm hoping to find a newspaper report for a clue as to death. Sometime after this, 1851, and 1862 (when John actually had his illigitimate child registered as a child of his marriage!) they became estranged. John had another "spouse" on his death certificate and the extra kid. He was named Gillespie Rankin McMILLAN, but brought up as Oscar. Luckily, on his mother's death certificate he is listed as "Rankin". Who cares why! it made our day! proof that the two were the one person. (There was a Gillespie RANKIN christened in Durness around the same time a John) Needless to say, this was a bit of a shock to the descendant's of Oscar McMILLAN - explains why they hadn't found a birth certificate. But, every time you find a bit of the jigsaw, it certainly creates a whole new set of questions. Thanks for your encouragement..... I'll pop off to the archives, as I'm pretty sure you did post a suggested guideline to size, etc some time back.
