I agree, back up frequently, and be careful of transferring data. I bought a new pc, and was trying to copy all my data from Family Tree Maker onto a zip drive, and in the transfer all was lost. Over 1,500 people...gone. I could have cried. This was last week. I use Excel to create pedigree and family charts, but my husband created Family Group Data Sheets in Dreamweaver, and we store everything there. You can see an example of it at www.familypangea.net (needs updating, very seriously, but it takes so much time) Luckily, I copied a good deal of the data from Family Tree Maker onto the website, so I actually kept about 30% of the information. The only problem with this method of storing records is that it isn't compatible with other's software, so it can't be imported. But it looks so much nicer on a website than just plain text! But whatever you use BACK UP FREQUENTLY: I did not, and lost notes on 700+ people, and it took me a long time to get back to the same point! Re pictures, unless you have a modern computer with many Gbs of empty space, I would say keep images, which are greedy of space separately on CD-R, Zip disc, etc. Donald Massey ----- Original Message ----- > As I build up my records and data, I'm looking for advice/comment as to how others store theirs. > > I presently use the freeware from Ancestry.com and Legacy to keep my 'tree' up to date, but how does that compare with other systems?
