"I Called on this person today. and found the house in very bad order. I also Called on her Brother Niel. 83. do who has been Confined to bed for some time. but I Saw his Son Donald. and we went to see the house, It appears when Niel got the Croft 83 previous to 1879 his late Mother & Sister Christy were unwilling to quit the house. and when Niel entered they went and lived in the barn where the mother died. and the above house had been Offered to Christy. and that Niel was to keep the house in repair. and provide fire. and other necessaries. but before She took possession. the house was burnt to the ground. and rendered useless. On the 2nd of June 1879 I went there. and took dimensions of the Same Site. and the Material required to rebuild the house again, wood & Lime was Supplied gratis. and I then arranged with Donald to do the work. which he was paid for. About 2 years ago I was Calling on Chirsty. and met Mr Logan. who Called there. while I was there. the house was then in want of thatching I Spoke to the Brother & his Son about having the house repaired. and I offered him Some Straw. which I had in Store. but he repaired it with divots [turfs] at the time, and with your permission, I have at this time offered him some Straw to thatch it. with Some of his Own. as Soon as the Weather will permit. and he has promised to do this. Christy is weakminded and rather difficult to put up with She keeps her Fowls. in the house. along with her. there is Ivy growing to the Walls and on to the roof. which She will not allow to be removed. and of Course that takes in the water when it rains. She depends on the Charity of Neighbours, for her living. She wont take Parochial relief, and is very highminded and is never reconciled to her Brother Niel. or his family. Since they got the Croft. and She distinctly States that they (her Brother) promised to Keep her Comfortable."
