Hi Madaline: Calders were numerous in the Parish of Durness, which is a large parish. They also had at least two aliases; Ekel (or sometimes Eagle) and Donn/Down (presumably after Rob donn , the famous Gaelic poet who was a Calder. Some also used the name of Bain but that is a common alias for several names. There was a Hugh baptised Dec 9, 1770, born to William Ekel, alias Calder, alias Macdholicustan (son of Donald, son of Hugh) in Mussell. There are several children of a Hugh Calder listed under the West Moine Mission Baptisms in the Durness OPR. West Moine is east of the Town of Durness, near Loch Eribol I think. The children are as follows: Isobel - 24 July 1804; Mary - 29 June 1806; Johanna - 12 May 1808; William - 12 Feb 1811; Effie - 12 May 1812. Unlike the entries for Durness proper, the mother's name is not shown, except for Effie where the mother's name is recorded as Marion macKenzie. The place of birth in each case is Badevoir, although the spelling is different in every case. It may be a hamlet or even a farm? The 'Aberach" Mackays descend from Iain Aberach, younger son of Angus Dubh the sixth Chief of MacKay, and half-brother of Neil Vass, the seventh chief. He acted as clan captain, during Neil's absence and was rewarded with the Strathnaver lands. He had numerous descendents, and Margaret Aberach MacKay might be one of them but I don't know this. Also, would any one have any information about a James Calder who married a Margaret Abrach Mackay May 1816in Durness. James Calder father was William Calder and he served in the Reay Fencible in the Irish Rebellion of 1789. The family story goes that when he came back from the war his wife was dead and his children were either adopted by other family members or on their own. I was wondering if any one can make a connection between William Calder and Hugh Calder, as they both service in the Irish Rebellion. Or betwwen James Calder and Hugh Calder. Would like to hear from any one working on the Calder's from Sutherlandshire.
