Dear Carol You wrote - >>>Catherine McIntosh of Inchverry House in Tongue married James MacKay a tailor in 1849. They had a family of four...Murdock @1852, John @1854, Flora @ 1856 married Joseph Munroe, and William @1860. Murdock MacKay married a Christina about 1880 in Tongue, and had a daughter Christina there. This family immigrated to Canada in 1884. The IGI does not give the marriage for Murdock and Christina or the daughter, Christina's birth date. <<< The IGI for Scotland includes mainly the Old Parish Records, i.e. Established Church of Scotland. However, starting in 1843, many families in Tongue joined the Free Church. So their marriages and baptisms were recorded in the Free Church Registers and don't appear in the IGI. The FC Baptismal book covers 1843-1877, and is held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. I had a look today for your people - To Parents, JAMES MACKAY, tailor, Inchverrie, & CATHERINE MACINTOSH WILLIAM MACKAY, born 30 March 1850, bap. 6 May 1850 (Yes, definitely 1850.) MURDO DONALD MACKAY, born 24 October 1851, bap. 4 November 1851. JOHN MACKAY, born 14 July 1853, bap. 17 July 1853. [name entirely faded], F, born [date faded] July 1856, bap. 13 July 1856 (this will be FLORA) The William I found is definitely in 1850. I searched to the end of the book, and found no other births for this couple. Compulsory registration started in Scotland in 1855, so it will be easy to find the details for Murdo's marriage and his daughter's birth. If you can bear to wait a month, I can do the lookup for you. BTW there are other Macintoshes at Inchverry at the same time, I wonder if they are also part of your family. I recorded these births (there may have been more). To Parents, HUGH MACINTOSH, tenant, Inchverry, & BARBARA MACINTOSH WILLIAMINA & GEORGINA MACINTOSH (twins), born 10 Oct. 1848 bapt. 18 Oct. 1848 GEORGE MACINTOSH, born 4 Mar. 1853, bap. 7 Mar. 1853. Hope this has been helpful. Mary Edinburgh, Scotland www.cmy.org.uk
