    3. I was wondering if any one would have any information about a John Mackenzie born about 1759 married 14 Feb 1782 in Durness to Isobel macKenzie born about 1760. They had at least three children that i have found. The first being Catherine mackenzie baptised 6 Nov 1783, she married Hugh Calder and moved to Cape Breton. The second was Alexander MacKenzie baptised 1 June 1812 (don't know what happened to him) The third was Barbara MacKenzie who also moved to Nova Scotia and married James Calder. Any one with information about John Mackenzie and Isabel Mackenzie or their children, I would really like to hear from you. Madaline

    3. Hi Madaline, I was very interested in your e-mail about Catherine Mc KENZIE, as it probably means I have been barking up the wrong tree!! An ancestor of my husband's, Thomas MATHER, born in Northumberland in 1783, moved to Durness and was a shepherd at Balnakeil and Kervaig. As well as several legitimate children, he had an illegitimate daughter Hannah in 1815, who took his name. Hannah MATHER's baptism record in Durness says that she was born in adultery to a Ket McKENZIE. Hannah later married Lachlan ROSS at Eriboll, and the 1851 census lists Lachlan and Hannah and their four children together with 'Catherine McKENZIE, mother-in-law, aged 67, pauper, born Durness'. As I could not find any other, I had rather presumed that the Catherine/Ket McKENZIE who gave birth to Hannah MATHER and was 67 in the spring of 1851 was the same Catherine McKENZIE baptised on 6 November 1783 in Durness to John and Isobel McKENZIE. I would be grateful to have more information on Catherine, as if you are sure she married a Hugh CALDER and moved to Cape Breton then one of us, probably me, is wrong!!
