    2. Are members aware of the above? The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another 12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at the discretion of the county organizer. Is there an organiser for Sutherland? Is this something people might be interested in doing/have the time to do? Does anyone know how to go about it? edward

    3. There is no organiser for Sutherland. We did discuss this on the list a long time ago. I cannot take this job on as it will be all time consuming and would mean that I would have no time for POSH, managing this list, the web site, our graveyards, washing my hair! Whoever takes this on will have to have a microfiche reader, lots of people to help, and be reasonably computer literate. The software is provided by the main organiser. Here is the latest news I have on the project: "The Scotland Free Census Project is part of the larger UK Free Census project (aka FreeCEN) that aims to transcribe all UK 19th century census returns to create an on-line 'free-to-view' database. The project was launched in April 2002 and to date has 6 active county projects and another 12 due to be underway by the end of the year. Each county project is beginning with the 1841 census returns and will move on to other years at the discretion of the county organizer. I am currently trying to recruit organizers for all open counties, including Sutherland. Organizers are responsible for recruiting and supervising a team of volunteers to transcribe their assigned county. To be an organizer, you just need some time, a computer and access to a microfilm or microfiche reader. All other materials are supplied by FreeCEN, including software, microfilm/fiche, and plenty of advice and instruction. If you are interested in organizing a project for Sutherland or another county, please contact me at [email protected] More information on the project can be found at http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html Thank you, Jennifer Gribble Scotland Recruiter & Ayrshire Coordinator UK FreeCEN Project http://www.speakeasy.org/~jgribble/scotland.html " If anyone wishes to take this on please contact Jennifer direct and then let us all know. I am certain that if an organiser for Sutherland can be found plenty of helpers would then follow. 3. I have been a volunteer on the Fife list for this Project for ages, but since I haven't got a microfiche or film reader, I've heard nothing from the organisers. So clearly, hard copies are not available. Would they buy fiche readers in bulk and sell on to us cheaply? A small point --- I'm curious to know what guarantees there are that we will continue to be offered free access to the index in perpetuity. A great deal of voluntary labour will be involved, plus cost of hardware.
