Ron Letter to the Editor, Northern Times, 25 October 2002: Sir: Can anyone recall hearing of an oil painting of the late Peggy Vass (nee Bannerman) which is said to have hung in one of the Helmsdale hotels- maybe even the Navidale Hotel? Peggy was an aunt of my own late grandmother, Mrs. Johan Ross, of Burnside, Navidale, Helmsdale. Here parents were John Bannerman and Eliza Murray. Peggy was born in the 1820s and married Alexander Vass, a fisherman of Balintore who, we believe, ran a fishing boat back and fore to Iceland. They made their home in Balintore where they had a family of six- John, Isabella, Thomas, ELiza, Nicholas and Ann. She and her husband died within hours of each other in 1885, when typhoid swept the village. Members of her family used to go up to Helmsdale to lok at this oil painting.Id anyone has any recollections of it would they please get in touch?
